Carol Anne Slater
I am a self-taught painter of landscapes, which communicate an intense emotional response in the viewer.
My art is expressed through a distinctly contemporary style and the sensual qualities of oil paint are important elements of my process.
I love the way they take a life of their own as they flow across the canvas evoking light and beautiful colour as the landscape emerges.
My starting point is to go out onto Ashdown Forest and the shoreline of Sussex and paint in wild gestural strokes.
The colours and shapes that continually unfold in front of me help my intuitive practice and contribute to the finished painting back in my studio.
I live and work in East Sussex and I am greatly influenced my the English landscape and painters such as Joan Eardley, Constable and JW Turner.
My first career was in nursing and I was delighted to be part of the special BBC Nurse programme in 2023 when I had the opportunity to share my nursing journey; especially the pioneering research I carried out for the DOH into the care of people with HIV in the 1990’s.
I believe there is a connection between human frailty and art expression as each has a sense of transiency and fleetingness.
I look forward to sharing my practice and will welcome you to my home gallery in East Sussex.

I am delighted with my new Beach Hut on Eastbourne Beach and will be there on every possible day painting the beautiful view
